A Little, Silly Life

Three states. A twenty-five-page final paper and starting a new doctoral class. Grading for midterm grades in two classes. Sharathon aftermath. And my wife up North with the grand puppy for time with her family. All in just a few weeks. My life seems a little silly sometimes.

One of my favorite bible accounts can be found in Mark, chapter six. The chapter opens with Jesus preaching in His hometown, where a prophet has little honor. He sends the disciples out in pairs where they preach new life, heal the sick and cast out demons, causing Herod to believe John the Baptist was back from the dead.  When they returned to Jesus and shared their adventures, He said let’s take a break and get some rest, because in their comings and goings, they didn’t have time to eat.  After a boat ride into the wilderness, people still gathered from far and wide to hear Jesus, which led to feeding the five thousand, with a basket of leftovers for each disciple. The chapter closes with Jesus walking on water, calming the disciples, and healing everyone who came to Him.

One truth shines out of the account for me, when I’m playing at being a busy ministry leader.  Even when I’m running too fast to eat, He calls me to stop and be with Him. Though He has made physical provision for me, He is more concerned with my spiritual nourishment and my time with Him.

So, it’s time to stop playing busy ministry leader, close my computer, find some quiet place, and spend some much-needed time in the Word, listening to Him.  Feel free to join me.

Pumpkin Spice & Fall Sharathon

School is back in session.  Temperatures seem to be cooling, thank you Lord, and days are growing shorter. Labor Day is behind us and the season of all things pumpkin spice is almost upon us.

If you are new to the Journey family, you should know the arrival of pumpkin spice also means the coming of our Fall Sharathon.  I’m sure you realize, raising money isn’t the easiest task, but it’s how we stay on the air. Sharathon is also good for us, because it reminds us how God provides for this ministry. And He always does it through listeners like you.

So, I’m praying Psalm 127 for you as we put the finishing touches on our Fall Sharathon.  We’re praying God will build your house, guard your city and shower blessings on you and your family. And as you give to The Journey®, know you are part of something greater. We’re building things together that will last long after we are gone and have an impact for eternity!

Fall Sharathon starts Tuesday, Oct. 2nd. We’ll be asking you to join our team.  Will you be praying about it even now?  Perhaps you would consider an early gift to be used as a challenge for others during the event. Click here to give an early gift. And tune in during Sharathon for some big news about the future of 88.3 The Journey.  You’ll be excited as we are, I promise.

Number Our Days

I’ve been thinking a lot about time recently.  It might be the fact I have spent forty years in broadcasting where we worry about seconds, not just minutes and hours. It might be its because we’re five weeks from school beginning again in the fall and I have too much to do.  Maybe it’s the paperwork I see for incoming freshman all have birthdates after 2000 now.

But I suspect it is a subconscious realization the big six zero is looming on the horizon for me this coming Spring.

Whatever the reason, time has been on my mind, since I never seem to have enough of it anymore.  Sometimes I wonder if I have ever had enough time.  I know for sure that is the thing I will enjoy the most about heaven is no longer living under the tyranny of the ticking clock.

And as I frequently do when I’m thinking about something, God whispers in my ear.  “Teach us to number our days, that we may have a heart of wisdom.”  A prayer of Moses, recorded by David in Psalm number 90.  The number of our days and wisdom.  Hmmm. Maybe I should focus less on how many days are left and spend more time on what is left to do.  Let me encourage you to spend your day well today.
